Phil,
I couldn't agree less with you. I think the polar opposite would help boost backgammon: Develop a world-wide results-based ranking system and ditch the popularity contest known as the Giants list. Extend the ranking down to the top 2000 or so, and update it every major tournament ... not once every two years as the Giants List does.
That's my opinion.
