Horizon effect?

That behavior looked like a horizon effect to me. We used to see this in chess software.
If the bot is currently overvaluing its chances in the big central fight, eventually a position will arise in which it can see a bad result in variations where it plays there immediately. But if it looks at making a peripheral play first, even one that is locally bad, the subsequent variations won't go deep enough in the center to see the bad outcome, and will evaluate as better.
In theory, this tends not to be a big problem, since you usually don't get bitten by a horizon effect until you already have a lost position. In practice, though, something can often be made out of a close negative result, especially if your opponent is already on his last overtime period.
