I don't even know the rules of Go, but followed the contest to hear the expert commentary on what led to the huge jump in playing strength. It seemed to me that one of the big hurdles was that it is apparently difficult to make an evaluation function to assess a given position...to clear this hurdle they leveraged neural networks that were trained on a combination of human games and self-play. Given that BG programs have used neural network technology to achieve world-class+ play for the last couple of decades, I was still left wondering what is the real new breakthrough here. Obviously I'm missing something here...can you explain?
