Sorry to hear about such a serious fall. I hope your recovery is swift.

My primary training for non-contact bear-in and bear-off situations came from a program I wrote. It uses a one-sided bear-off database to lookup moves with the lowest effective pip counts (EPC). In a given position, it finds all legal moves, and checks the EPC for each. Ignoring the opponent's position, it plays the move with the lowest resulting EPC.

This trained me well for most situations. I make adjustments when I trail badly, needing a doublet to win. Last-roll situations are the most obvious example of that. For the final two checkers, I look for the separation that is closest to e = 2.718...
