Most game playing programs have evaluation functions for leaf node evaluation, but backgammon may have been of the first games where neural net evaluation functions were successful. As far as I know, there is currently no strong chess program that uses NNs - traditionally, chess programs used simple and fast hand-crafted evaluation functions to speed up the tree search, and modern evaluation function seem to have evolved from that, being heavier today, but still hand-crafted.
