Bracket dreaming

As someone who has run ABT and other events, I will answer your question as best I can, and for the record, speaking only for myself with my own opinions:
So why isn't it easy to find updates and results quickly on live events?
1. I believe that many tournament directors do not realize the importance of keeping the rest of the world up to date on progress at their tournaments...they simply don't care that much are are too busy and it does take time to keep updating the software. How do you measure the importance of keeping people around the world informed? I believe, as I think most will, that it is good for the game, and creates interest and excitement and will also encourage more people to watch the stream, if available, if they know what is going on.
2. I do not believe this extra work and function should be left up to each individual tournament director. It is silly that we have to search each week to see who is posting where. I hope that someday there will truly be an international backgammon federation and one of it's many functions is to centralize information so we can all access it easily. There should be one web site to go to, any time, and get the most recent updates on any "sanctioned" event in the world. Yes, every event should be sanctioned by a federation, as the federations represent the players and the federation (players) should have a right to say what tournaments meet minimum standards of payouts, rules, and reporting, and of course, they would then go into an international ranking and rating of players in attendance. I could list about 20 more reasons why we should have an international body to pool our resources, marketing, and coordination of activities and information, but that is another subject.
3. Many tournament directors, like most of us, including myself, are, simply, old. We are generally old school and not that savvy about the latest technology and therefore we fear things that are new and things on the internet. Yes, there are some of us old foggies that still want to learn new things and are willing to try new software, but many are not that way, and many of those people happen to run tournaments. Now, I am not dissing old people...I am dissing old people who refuse to keep up with changing times and technology where it benefits the game and the players. This is just one example, and again, I won't list others because it is off topic.
4. Lack of good volunteers. For every 10 people on this site that are willing to make recommendations and criticisms, and cry about tournament directors and others not doing enough for us, I think there is less than 1 who actually steps up and volunteers to do the work and do something about it. If there is a tournament that is not updating a web site with information, all it takes is ONE PERSON to go to the TD and volunteer to do it. But instead, we have 10 people who bitch about it.
Please do not take this personally, Mr. McDonough, as I do not specifically mean you or that there is anything wrong with voicing your opinion about something you feel is lacking. What I am saying is that a lot of what is lacking could be helped with some elbow grease.
The world simply does not have enough Michelle Steinberg's and others like her that are willing to give up some of their time to help promote the game or help their federation grow, or help grow the game in general. A little more of that alone would solve the problem until the whole thing is finally coordinating in a truly professional way, which is what the game should have if we are to move forward and compete with all the other past times and games that do have their act together.
