There have been a lot of posts in this thread on what the time penalty should be, some of them quite involved, depending on how much time the player has remaining. Apart from the potential complexity of it all, I can't help feeling how arbitrary a time penalty is.

The suggestion, that is being considered by the European Federation, based upon Danny Kleinman's idea, seems to make more sense: on the third infringement by a player, allow the opponent to choose their own next roll. But, rather than give the player the opportunity to positively influence their own roll, might it not be more appropriate for them to be able to negatively influence the illegal players roll? That is, give them the right to change it to whatever they want! Their own delay would be started while they decide upon this, they put the dice on the numbers they want for their opponent, then they press their clock.

Of course, the illegal player may (in the opinion of the opponent) already have rolled their worst number. But they would have suffered a time penalty as, after they had made their play, ended their turn, had the fact made known to them and the position restored, they would have had to run off their delay before moving.

I can't help also thinking that, maybe this right should occur on the SECOND infringement. One player (Casper?) stated how rare it was, in their streamed matches, for players to make illegal moves. And, the higher you set this threshold, the more chance there is that there might be a disagreement on how many illegal plays one player had already made. It probably needs to be written down on the score sheet, ideally with a special box for this purpose.

What should happen if, after making an illegal play, where the opponent has had an opportunity to change the roll, another illegal play is then made? I suggest a score penalty. This might be one point, or the cube value. Either way, if that penalty does not end the match, that game continues.
