Can you roll your dice when the opponent is away?

Agreed.

When a player is "legitimately" away from the table, I don't think his opponent should roll the dice. Before leaving, however, the onus for pausing the clock falls on the player who must leave.

Interestingly, that is not how I see it handled with dice. When a player rolls a die off the board, and onto the floor, it is usually his opponent who pauses the clock.

In practice, we tend to take a lax approach to these things. 99.9 times out of 100, both players want to play fairly and cordially.
