Trying to run off the gammon seems wrong. Blue needs 11 crossovers to beat the gammon; White, only 7 to win.

What about running off the backgammon? Blue won't like it if White rolls a doublet that rips four checkers off. I usually sound the backgammon warning buzzer when an opponent has 8 or fewer checkers left. That's the signal for me to weigh anchor, and run with one checker.

If you take away the gap on White's 3pt, then I would run one checker. As things stand, however, I think that would be a mistake. The gap gives Blue too much shot equity.

I think Blue should split his anchor, and play for a double shot. Splitting gives White bad 1s and 3s. Splitting to the 22pt means that Blue will get a double shot when White rolls 31, 41, 51, or 61. When White rolls, 32, 43, 53, or 63, Blue will get a single shot.

For the 5, I like breaking from the rear, 8/3. Playing 7/2, in order to slot the 2pt, would be nice, but that would require breaking the five-prime, just when the hitting is about to start.

24/22, 8/3

Mike
