Ok, here's another way for me to look at it. Considering only outfield shots, both candidate plays leave a double shot. 16/10 lets them hit with 1s and 3s, while 8/2 lets them hit with 1s and 4s. That's 20 vs 21 shots if I counted right. Meanwhile, 16/10 avoids putting a checker permanently out of play, and dupes threes to hit and cover their five point.

16/10 now seems clear.
