Usually gammons are costly when they almost exactly win the match for your opponent. So there you are right. But you also need to look at the match winning chances after a single loss. If you are trailing 12-2 to 15, your chances in the match are very slim, so the additional cost of a gammon loss (and losing the match for sure) is minor. This is what Neil means, put in less technical terms.
