Rollout: who to trust - Gnubg or XG - backgame

In Response To: Rollout: who to trust - Gnubg or XG - backgame (Taper_Mike)

Thanks to Seth, Hominid and Taper_Mike for responding.

So it seems that I have happened across a 'bad' (but interesting) position to have a quiz on.

I guess the bottom line is that there is no conclusive 'best gameplan' against this super-backgame.

The top 3 moves seem to be a mix of strategems -

a quieter play (13/9 13/8), the polar, and dynamic double-hit (17/12* 6/2*), and the 'do both' hit and build (13/9 7/2*) with not much equity lost (< 0.017) between these 3 very strategically different plays.

----------------------------

Hominid "The object is to claim your home points as the opponent is forced to vacate them and at the same time endeavour to force the opposition to crunch their board."

This is good advice but (despite their seemingly different methods) all of the few best ranked moves seem to work towards this to some extent so it is difficult to choose between them. I was hoping to give my audience clear Rule of Thumb(s) that could be used in this situation. Perhaps they don't exist in this particular case :-?

Hominid >> what do you expect with such low ply ratings. As well as XG++, I also chose what looked like the most stringent preset RO available in XG: 'Moves 3-ply, Cube Decisions: XG roller'

I'm fairly inexperienced in using rollouts. What alternative RO settings would you (or anybody else) recommend for this type of position in XG?

Hominid >> Learn how to do a timing count in these circumstances

What is a 'timing count' please? I've not heard of this term before. Do you have any links to 'howtos'?

Taper_Mike

Thanks for your more detailed explantion on the mechanics of rollouts.

>> Below I used my b.rol for GnuBg and XGR++ for XG. Notice how close the plays are. Both bots picked the same three plays. All are within 16 millipoints of the play picked as best.

Interestingly, your b.roll results seem to differ from my b.rol results (the 3rd play - I got 17/8 vs. your 13/9 7/2*), despite my closely following your b.rol setup instructions from your earlier post. Have you changed the setup for your b.rol since you made your original post?

Also, do you have time to give step-by-step instructions for how to produce a more accurate rollout more suited for backgames that I could use in XG for ths position. I will try and run it if it takes less than a week!

Many thanks,

sebalotek
