I don't know Akiko but my guess is that she prefers clocked matches: your time is your own, and no one can rush you. If, as you imply she seems to take way too long without one, then it may be that this is, as Phil suggests, a function of her making an honest effort, unconstrained by objective TC. It might also, perhaps, be a protest - unconsciously at least - against a player who declined to let the match be clocked.

BTW if TC are too generous - and I would place 12/5 for singles play most certainly in this category - then it can still be almost as uncomfortable as playing an extremely slow unclocked player. I reckon 15/3 or 12/4 could produce an unpleasant experience for many players, if an opponent really utilised it.
