This was unfortunate because this opponent was playing a form of cubeless bg and I didn't see how I'd lose to him.

Seriously? In 2014 Charlotte tournament I lost 2-7 on the bubble to a nice grandpa who didn't use the doubling cube. (Well, actually he would sometimes offer the cube when either gin or too good.)
