I believe that 'good player' is in fact Kit Woolsey. I also think he is advising to err aggressively rather than defensively, which is good advice.

Applying it to the 5pt might be reasonable - I am not sure. I think that checker based decisions tend to have more specific implications, and deal in the minutia of overall positional equity, rather than the generics of doubling windows, so I would advise much caution of broadly stating that 'if in doubt, make the 5pt' - I would instead go with a Stickism (I think its Stick's) - "unless you have a very good reason not to make the 5pt, you should". You can broadband that to cube decisions too, but its much less impacting there, and less applicable.
