John -

Thanks for asking the question I have been asking myself for quite some time. Like you mentioned, it's a combination of sandbagging and the fact that the Open entry fees are so much higher than the Advanced.

I've been operating along the lines of thinking that I will judge my own readiness to enter the Open on my match PR (and trying to record and analyze as many of my matches as possible). Unfortunately, the live streaming that occurs at ABT events all but ignores the Advanced divisions. I realize WHY this is. Not many people are interested in watching Advanced matches online, and there are a limited amount of streaming resources. I'm one of the very few people interested in watching, say, and Advanced final from an ABT event.

It's a shame because I would think one way of telling someone that they need to enter the Open would be to have PR results in hand that show that they are no longer an Advanced player.

I've bought so hard into the PR approach that I'm even considering entering a BMS event to evaulate myself and make it public - even though it is pretty much a no-win situation for me. I either play poorly and humiliate myself publicly and show everyone I am a middle of the road Advanced player, or I play decently and have everyone call me a sandbagger.

Based on my own results from recording my matches for the past several months, it's a crap shoot as to which will happen. I have matches where I play quite well PR-wise. And I have matches where I am a PR train wreck.
