Yes, they were technically illegal plays, which the player who made them was unaware of, and which were deliberately not pointed out with the intention of 'winning' on time. Seems that, at the very least, they should attempt to recreate the position when the first of the series of illegal plays occurred, and play from there. Or just dq the opponent. It's a mess, but one thing is for sure, one player's gaming ethos has been exposed for all to see.
