Let's spell it out for them!
1) You may have played illegally, or your opponent may simply have thought that you did. By pressing your clock, your opponent is given the chance to confirm the legality of the play by pressing his, or to refute it.
2) If you don't respect this formality, and the opponent thinks, rightly or wrongly, you did move illegally, then you have removed the evidence of what the roll actually was. This is very significant if you each saw different numbers!
3) The closed out opponent might want to use his delay time to think! (And occasionally, he might even have a possible recube.)
4) Don't you want your delay time? If it's not DMP you might need it later. In fact, even it is is, you might still need it later!
