Stick, that question seems disingenuous to me. I get that the player *ought* to notice, but it is very natural for a player who has closed out an opponent to forget the clock because it is a rhythm of play that occurs very very rarely as an overall % of backgammon plays.

The closed-out player is merely sitting there with all the attention in the world to notice any number of things.

Again, not meaning to absolve the faulty player from his responsibility, but it's just very obvious to me, from my own experience, that this is a quite natural mistake to make. I'd say I am far more likely to notice my opponent getting it wrong than noticing myself getting it wrong.
