Clock Irregularities Should Not Be Classed as Illegal Moves

Clocks are still relatively new to backgammon, having become common only in the 1990s and afterwards. There are still many major tournaments where clocks are not used or are optional.
Clock irregularities have been classed as illegal moves. I think this wrong. Doing so creates ridiculous interpretations. The illegal moves rule was originally created to handle the frequent circumstance in backgammon where checkers are misplayed. It's long history had nothing to do with clocks.
The current question is an example of an absurdity that occurs when a legalistic interpretation of a clock irregularity is classed as an illegal move. We are expected to believe that rolling the dice multiple times in "a single turn" comprises an "illegal move."
I say this is wrong.
In its long history prior to clocks, the illegal move rule NEVER anticipated that a player rolling the dice more than once in a turn would be classed as an illegal move. To say it does now tosses out the precedent of this long history.
The rules of backgammon, under legal-moves-only and otherwise, need a new category to handle clock irregularities. They are not the same as illegal moves.
