I'm always open to listening to someone who 'does something to win' that other people don't do. I've looked many a times at a couple players' matches, esp. their cube play, to see if there may be any underlying magic that is helping their results. No, there isn't. They're making errors and blunders generally because they're making errors and blunders, not something that will help their MWC.

I don't know if there is enough data out there to do the following study (probably not, but given that more and more matches are being recorded, perhaps at some point we will get enough data), but one could in principle see whether people consistently play with a higher PR when they play against Player Y than when they play against a random opponent. If so, then to me this would indicate that Player Y is "doing something to win." You won't necessarily be able to see this just from studying a transcript of the match, because things like body language are not recorded in a transcript.
