Can using the auto bearoff setting ever be cheating?

I've looked into the definition of the auto bearoff setting on different BG software/servers. Depending on the software, I've seen the following definitions if you have the option checked:

1) The computer will bearoff the most # of checkers possible

2) The computer will play what it thinks is the best move

3) The user has the option to set auto bearoff behavior to either 1 or 2

To me, definition #1 is never an issue. You are accepting some small chance to make a suboptimal play for the sake of speeding up the game, and you can always turn the setting off if you want.

However, I have some concerns on why definition # 2 should ever be allowed on BG servers in human vs human play. I'm pretty sure that if you have this option checked on GammonSite, the computer uses definition #2). Why is it ever OK to have the computer decide what is the optimal checker-play?
