It is not because the 6 is empty after the 6, it is because the 6 is "thin", which means either zero checker or a few checkers with more checkers on the 4 and 5. You set yourself up for continued problems with missing 3s, because the missing 3 does not play constructive.
In the alternative that Phil describes, when a 6 comes before the 3, you cannot fill the gap anymore. In contrast, if we play 4/3, missing aces play very natural 2/1, and if we miss again in scenarios with a bunch of ones and 2s, we usually can slot an open point and continue to smooth out our position. I have no ROT to offer, unfortunately.
