In Response To: Who can explain this position pair (RO info) (Bob Koca)

At scores where you could kill your opponents gammons with a recube and you are in a position where you can lose a lot of gammons you get significantly more recube power if the gammon losses are due to being way behind in the race but with an anchor or two as opposed to the threat of being closed out. You need to look ahead to when the recube might actually occur. If you are potentially getting blitzed and are looking to recube you probably survived the blitz by anchoring. When you are recubing your opponent's gammons are probably low. In the backgame situation you may be cubing due to a shot while the opponent's gammons are still high. You get some extra juice from those cubes that you don't often get from the potential blitz games.
