BMAB (US) RANKING TOURNAMENT #3 JUNE 2016 REPORT

The third BMAB tournament held in the USA produced scintilating PR results, with 6 players achieving PRs below 5.0 and one result below 2.5! This was a brilliantly run event directed by Grandmaster Dmitriy Obukhov, and very ably assisted by Ben Friesen and Keene Marin. Special thanks are due to Carol Joy Cole for very kindly hosting the event at the venue for the annual Michigan Championships at Novi.

John O'Hagan heads the table by achieving the astonishing low PR of 2.45, closely followed by Kit Woolsey with a similarly astonishing 2.65. By virtue of his fantasic results at all three BMAB tournaments in the USA and by similary superlative streamed performances at the ABT tournaments at Chicago and Novi, John is awarded the title of Grandmaster (Class 2) with an overall average PR of 3.19, securing his position in the elite pantheon of backgammon greats.

Paul Weaver also achieved a remarkable PR of 3.02, reducing his overall average PR to 3.51, a hair's breadth away from reaching an upgrade to Grandmaster (Class 2). Keene Marin achieved the title of Master (Class 3) with provisional grading of Master (Class 2), which he is likely to achieve when he reaches the threshold requirement of 100 experience points. Schlomo Karbal achieved an upgrade to Master (Class 3). Greg Merriman also achieved an upgrade to Advanced (Class 1) Expert proficiency level.

Steve Sax (PR 4.00) performed excellently, as did BMAB newcomers Frank Talbot (PR 4.09), Steve Brown (PR 4.68) and Brent Cohen (PR 5.21).

Congratulations to all these players and to all the participants, organisers and supporters for making BMAB (US) #3 a spectacularly successful event.
