Thanks to all for the input. I suppose that you have asked at least a pretty good question when the folks responding are players of this caliber.

I take the point on the missed cube and, prospectively, the need to maximize your ability to offer a (takeable) cube on the next roll. Still find it interesting that the math is such that the play with the greater winning chances (by a lot) and higher gammon chances (by a bit) is still the clearly inferior play.

My thinking had always been that equity is basically some kind of 'weighted average' of winning chances plus the net of gammon wins and gammon losses. Obviously the story is a bit deeper than that.
