Can someone explain this to me

Nope - I get it. John and Casper made that very clear.

My surprise was due to a very simple minded, and flawed, understanding of equity. I have always, when looking at the equity difference between two plays, figured it to be a matter of 'this play has a greater winning percentage (and perhaps net gammon wins) versus another so that accounts for its superiority'. And in almost all cases that is true (or at least it is not as obvious as in this position that it is false).

Here however that simple line of thinking clearly does not apply, which prompted the question. The fact that 'correct playing to optimize cube handling' (or whatever the better expression is) is also factored into the equity calculation, while not being reflected in the winning or gammon percentages, was the surprise.
