Question about match strategy for Grandmasters

First, I am very happy for Victor...he is one of my idols not only because of his skill, but because of his good sportsmanship and great sense of humor. It's always fun to be with him and I always try to find a way to spend time with him at tournaments all over the world when possible.
My question is this: in order to achieve consistently low PR's, do players like Victor have to pretty much ignore who they are playing relative to skill-difference decisions?
We all know that it has been proven that there are some things you should do if you are playing a significantly weaker opponent, particularly in your cube decisions. Jake and Walter's "Fish" book even give some formulas for this, but I have heard great players say many times that you maximize your winning chances in certain situations by doing things other than what XG says is right against a "perfect" player.
Or, are they doing this to some extent and is it possible that Mochy, Michi and Victor would have even better PR's if they completely ignored their opponent? How can anyone ever achieve under 2.5 PR if they adjust their game to an opponent?
Lastly, is it possible that the desire to post lower PR's has changed how they approach the game? Do they ever have to stop and think about this when making a cube decision, thinking, "I know it is correct to take this but why should I take a 4 cube in a close race against this bozo?"
