A problem I always have when playing with newbies without the cube is: do gammons count? Or is this DMP?

I'll base my comments on DMP.

First, I don't think it's all that awkward, it's more that there are several good things to do and I'm not sure what's best.

Hitting is certainly thematic, so 8/3(2) for sure. Then, with nine in the zone, making a third homeboard point seems right to give white nine dances. Unstacking the six seems better than making the deuce, so I'll do that.

Running the backmen seems anti-positional - not that we need two anchors, it's that it's a blitz position. 13/3(2) Looks like a real candidate - eleven in the zone instead of nine, but only two homeboard points instead of three, plus no more midpoint.

8/3(2) 6/1(2) for me.

Not sure if gammons counting or not matters.
