General principle: If you're a backgamee and you're in some danger of losing the timing battle then it's important to fill in the gaps between the backgamer's anchors. Otherwise that gap will be a thorn in your side later.

On that basis I would make the 3pt while White's board is still imperfect and a hit is far from fatal.
