I understand the "wonderful prizes for the winners" part but not the "to compete for scholarships".

What will be the basis for the scholarships? Low income? Discriminated minority? Promoting a certain filed/career, a certain school/institution, a certain brand name, etc.? Or perhaps "academic merit" as suggested by "compete for"??

And what will those bright kids will go on to study based on being good backgammon players? Will they aim to earn a BA/MA/PHD in backgammon?

"Academic merit" reminded me of the argument that PR is an "academic concept" and suddenly the answers become very clear... :)

Looking at the people and sponsors behind this, it's obvious that the purpose of this is to create buyers for backgammon equipment/books/software/lessons/etc. and to ensure a future supply of gambling fish and dedicated long-term tournament players.

I hope this project never succeeds and I will take any opportunity to campaign agaist it.

If you want to popularize for only the sake of the game and the players, (a la chess), you need to redeem backgammon from having become a purely gambling tool. Go back to the classic game. Get rid of the cube and other stupid rules like Crawford, Jackoby, Mackoby... And of course no such things as less than 5-point matches, especially no 1-pointers or "money sessions"...!

After saying all this, I feel like it may be a good time for Kack Mack to sign off for the season...
