I give a lesson on bearing in that includes 34 positions with different variations, and this is one of the positions. I would say that at least 75% of intermediate players get this wrong and at least 25% of open players get it wrong.
It is generally right not to bring in the last checker if the alternative is to slot the 4 or 5 point. Once I show this I then show a play where the alternative is to slot the 2 or 3 point, and they often get that wrong too...as it is better to bring the checker in.
Then I show a variation where you have two checker left outside and you can bring one of them in or fill a hole on the 4 or 5, and virtually all fill the hole, and here it is wrong.
And all of these plays, and many other non-contact plays, are not trivial.
Another example of non-contact plays that are not trivial is when you are bearing in to prevent gammons or when you are bearing off and you need doubles to win. Often played wrong with major consequences.
