In Response To: Noncontact checker plays are all trivial (Timothy Chow)

This problem is obvious with QF, but the trick is making these sorts of play OTB. It's not so common for wasting a pip to be right when the alternative doesn't leave an internal empty point. However, since the 6pt is empty, there's no way to replenish the 3pt when Blue rolls a 3, so if Blue plays 8/2 3/off then to avoid missing, he has to roll 4 big numbers (4, 5, or 6) before rolling two 3's. While that's not so herculean a task, he's better off not setting himself that task at all; the "wasted" pip is unlike to cost him anything, since Blue has plenty of 2's to play (even if a gap forms on his 2pt, he can play 4/2 efficiently).
