Right. This is another one that would probably have grabbed me. Like you I probably would have been awake enough not to play 9/6 (though maybe not), but the difference between leaving the blot on the 4 or 5 would have totally escaped me.

You are right when you say the key is getting this right over the board. What is needed, unless you are a whole lot smarter than I am (admittedly, not a high bar), is a set of useful heuristics for these positions. Perhaps looking at many different variations like this would go some way to developing those heuristics, an exercise I have yet to do.
