Are they strong or great at math or are they strong or great at backgammon math? I consider myself proficient with backgammon math and numbers in general but toss me into an actual math class and my GPA will swirl down the toilet.

Those who do math for a living it seems to me get hung up on the math in backgammon. They overdo it in a sense. It's a game of math but it isn't, it's more a game of pattern recognition. I think with their strong math background it's hard to get away from that. If you can't get away from it as a numbers game I believe it will hold you back.
