Stick, you might be right, but I don't think great math skills have held back Magriel, Koca, Art Benjamin, Nack, Wilcox, Russell, MCG, Senk, Robertie, Jake, Neil, Grandell, Levermann, Gus, Svobo, Petko, Ring, Sander, Trice, Sylvester, Malcolm, Jacoby, Mochy, Petko, O'Hagan, Wachtel, Weaver, Storer, and I am sure there are many others who have proven to be excellent at math and also excel at backgammon.
Now I am sure there are some great players who aren't great at math and who play more by experience and intuition, and I think it is true that you can be a great backgammon player without great overall math skills, but I believe the above list (and many players I have left off) show a strong correlation to skill at math and skill at backgammon.
I would say the above list would score well above the standard deviation of math skills, even amongst highly-educated people. (I apologize to those who I have left off the list...I am sure many of the great European players also have amazing math skills but I don't know them or their backgrounds well enough to put them on the list.)
Yes, there is a difference between backgammon math and general mathematics, but being strong in general math makes it much easier to become a top backgammon player. I think the above list is strong proof of that premise.
