Here I don't entirely agree with Stick. I don't know many top backgammon players that are not reasonably strong at math, and many of them are great at math.
Relative to Pineapple Bluff Gammon, I don't know many people who, over the board can figure out the odds. I have only played with a couple who could: Joe Russell and Jim Pasko, and Hino (Akiko's husband). And knowing the odds greatly increases your ability to play the game and use the cube (and bluffing) well in this variation.
Knowing the odds of hitting etc. in normal backgammon is not that difficult and there are many shortcuts, but coming up with your doubling window and take point at different scores and calculating your winning chances in a given position and the affect of cube vig can require some pretty heavy duty calculations.
Maths is something very precise, how many times in a match we really use maths heavily? In the bearoff last rolls, in the rest what we do is estimation of the chances based on reference situations and understanding of the game. The same happens in sports betting, is not so much maths there for the main markets but people think there is, being quick at calculations it helps anyway. I think a good memory helps more then maths in bg, regarding playing a new game like Pinneaple Bg there it counts much more because with 3 dice is more complex to calculate probability of hitting, entering. It is also very important that you played already the game, bluffing plays a role in the game and in the bearoff you are more familiar with cube decisions so I am not sure you are an underdog.
