Maybe we're just quibbling over what "far fewer than you'd expect" means. I would not expect "math geniuses" to be particularly good at backgammon. Perhaps all that's going on is that most people, being uninformed about what "math genius" entails, have unrealistic, inflated expectations of how well "math geniuses" should be at backgammon. When those expectations are not fulfilled, instead of blaming their own ignorance of math, they blame the math geniuses for allegedly misapplying their math skills.
