I don't know if I've read anything by Art on backgammon, but I have read Doug's articles on Gammon Village. They're a mixed bag; some I think are excellent, while others are too mathematical (!) for me.

But what someone writes when they're asked to contribute to a backgammon column is very poorly correlated to what they do when honing their own game. I know that if I were asked to write something for GV, I'd probably try to contribute something original to the literature that I didn't think anyone else would be able to contribute. What I chose to write about would have little to do with what I do when I'm sitting down to work on my own backgammon game (unless I were specifically asked to write about that).
