I read the excerpt in the New Yorker and I have to confess that I wasn't impressed. It seemed to pander to the reader's desire to watch sleazy characters say and do crazy things, sometimes getting away with it and sometimes imploding, at the expense of real character development. The actual backgammon didn't strike me as credible either. Playing mind games with the opponent via excessively timid cube action doesn't sound very effective to me.
