Sailboat match racing on the downwind leg. The boat that's behind blocks the wind of the boat that's ahead and can go faster. If the trailer times it correctly, they can get an inside overlap at the leeward mark and start out the next upwind leg with a significant advantage. There's no scoreboard here so maybe this one doesn't count.
Another example from sailboat racing is that in fleet regattas (i,e, a bunch of boats sailing a series, as opposed to match racing which is one on one) the normal way to score it is to throw out a boat's worst score after N races (where N usually is 5)
So, for example, in a 50 boat fleet, your boat misses the first race and is scored DNS for a score of 51. You win the next three races for a total of 54. You are then well behind on the scoreboard but as long as you don't blow race 5 you're probably going to win with a score in single digits since that 51 will be discarded.
I suppose the backgammon example is trailing 3a-2a and you've handed your opponent the cube. You're on the way to 2aC, but the scoreboard shows you behind.
