Well stated. We can agree to disagree.
One fault I will note in your discussion. I will agree there might be as many calls for rulings in either case. So, no time is saved in that respect. However, time is saved in every case where dice on a checker is valid in contrast to every case where a dice on a checker is invalid and a re-roll (and possible clock adjustment) is required.
I agree with you, Stick -- with very little focus, it is no problem whatsoever for me to roll an entire match with never putting a dice on a checker. However, some are challenged in this regard. I played one guy a seven point match in LA this weekend and he must have put dice on checkers a minimum of fifty times. It might well have been twice that number if each of the initial instances were not valid.
Nothing can be more time consuming, boring, and frustrating than some opponent having to roll the dice 5-6 times in a single turn to achieve a valid roll. We have all seen it happen.
Dice flat on a checker being invalid is a relatively modern rule. For the vast majority of the 5,000+ year history of backgammon dice flat on checkers has been valid. In substantial areas of the world today dice flat on checkers is a valid roll. So, I'm not terribly receptive to the 'tradition' argument.
A random roll is a random roll. Try it, you may like it.
