New Rule - Dice Flat on Checkers

Historically, backgammon was played with one set of dice and dice were allowed to be be on checkers. I am not sure when or why the rule for two sets of dice came into being, perhaps it was because backgammon was historically touch-move and people just learning the game found that difficult. Without touch-move there had to be some way to signify the end of a move and using two sets of dice was a solution. I have a good idea why the rule was adopted that dice can not land on checkers. I think, in the days before lipped cups and shaking requirements, the rule was made to insure the dice were given a decent roll and not dropped-shot onto a checker.
After 1000's of years of evolution of the game, we are finding that are ancestors did some things that were ahead of our time.
