Blue is ahead in the race and just wants to get past white's checkers. If the roll were a 61, I can see blue scooting past without hitting to minimize contact.

Might stopping at the 9 point provide fewer shots than hitting? 11 immediate shots vs 5 fly shots from the bar, but that's not the end of the story since blue doesn't always run his checker to safety.

I'll still hit. How big an error can it be?
