Fastest/best pipcounting method?

I don't have a good answer to your question because I haven't tried very many pip counting methods, but I have a couple of comments.
I have found Ash Dalvi's observation about the number 13 to be useful. For those with a Gammon Village subscription, his article is here. The main point is the checkers on the midpoint are 13 pips each, checkers symmetrically placed about your own bar sum to 13 pips, and checkers on the bar or directly opposite each other sum to 25 which is almost 2x13. This doesn't solve all pip-counting problems by itself but I've found it to be helpful in many positions.
I keep a running pip count in non-contact races and sometimes in holding games where there's no hitting, but I'm curious as to whether anybody routinely keeps a running pip count all the time. It strikes me as an inefficient use of mental energy, and the few times I've watched top players online, they always seem to stop and count pips at critical moments, which suggests to me that they're not keeping a running pip count.
