Yeah, maybe. But don't forget that it's in most rules sets, not just the new USBGF ones. And therefore, it's not simply a "disfavoured practice" but actually an illegal one. It would seem that it's to help the opponent to more easily check the legality of the move, which it is if chequers are moved with one hand only.

However honest we are, I don't think it's a good habit (more so as it's illegal). Then again, I'd rather play someone who often did this, but who never made tentative moves which, inconsistently it would seem, ARE legal of course! They can be very hard to follow, especially if our ability to recall the exact starting position is not always perfect. (Of course, in other games it seems, you don't have to worry about this as such moves are not allowed.)
