Fastest/best pipcounting method?

I'm not a great pip counter either, and should work on this skill more, but I find it very time-efficient to to use the "shift method" to simply find the difference between the two players. There are a lot of positions where it is almost comically easy to do this compared to counting both sides, and in a great many positions, just getting the difference is enough information for the decision at hand. (Down 8 in a 5-point holding game? No problemo). When it's not, I count the leader's position to complete the picture.
I'll often keep a running count of the difference once we get to a position where a race-based cube action seems imminent (late/broken contact). That some people are able to do this from beginning to end of every game while still enjoying themselves goes to show how people have really different brains.
My problem isn't so much pip-counting but holding the numbers in my head -- forgetting the first count by the time I finish the second. So the shift method feels a little easier to me.
