I recall the late Walter Trice saying this regarding some complicating play or other, I forget the details, but I think it applies here, too:

"It's what you would do if you are better than your opponent--and who isn't?"

A player who thinks they are more likely to draw that wrong pass or take than be on the wrong side of a similar error draw against a particular opponent, may decide to mess around at 2a2a by waiting a long time to double, and try to gain an edge that way. The game is afoot if their opponent plays along and tries to do the same, holding off with the cube until they think they can be the one to draw an error, or perhaps become legitimately too good to double.

If later in the "Quickie" event on they are paired vs. someone they know is likely to outmaneuver them, they can always double at the first opportunity and end this game-within-a-game. This probably won't happen often because...hmm, something about "...and who isn't?" comes to mind >>

I find this stuff interesting. However, if a director wants to speed up the Quickies to make sure everyone makes their flight back to wherever, that's fine too. Make 'em one point instead of two, and there will be no more three-game two-point matches to logjam the drawsheet. But it won't be as interesting to play or to watch, either.

So I will not grab my pitchfork and march to DC to protest this change if you decide to make it, but I think it takes a little of the fun out of the Quickie if you do.
