Nice one!!
Depending on what you mean by "this kind of play," I think that it is not so uncommon. If you're playing a holding game, it's common to reach a position where you have to concede either your anchor, your midpoint, or your board. Any of those could be the right play depending on the position. In particular, running one checker off the anchor can be the right play if you have a big board advantage and it maintains the most contact for the longest amount of time.
What's special about your position is that several somewhat unusual factors are coming together all at once.
1. You're over 40 pips behind in the race and yet your roll forces you to concede something.
2. You have a third checker back.
3. The roll enables you to make an almost-perfect board while your opponent's board is comparatively weak.
