Legal Move (Redouble) ?

I transcribed a match from the NY tournament today and ran into the following situation....

Player A is is leading 4 away/6 away and holding a 4 cube. On his turn to roll, he redoubles to 8. His opponent takes, saying thank you very much and the match continues.

Question...Is the redouble legal or is the cube "dead" when a 4 away player is holding a 4 cube?
